About us
For over 40 years, MetaSystems has been a leading provider of automated and semi-automated imaging software for microscopy. Our customers and users are based in more than 100 countries worldwide, working across a wide range of fields including clinical cytogenetics, microbiology, forensics, toxicology, and beyond.
MetaSystems—part of the non-profit MetaSystems Foundation—takes pride in having set industry standards for microscope-based imaging in many of these disciplines. Our solutions are designed to enhance productivity, accuracy, and consistency in laboratory environments.
At the core of our portfolio are two complementary platforms: Ikaros, our interactive imaging solution, and Metafer, our fully automated imaging software. Together, they enable streamlined workflows that not only save valuable time but also allow users to focus on critical analytical tasks. By standardizing processes that were once manual, our technologies significantly improve the consistency and quality of digital image evaluation across multiple applications.
Headquartered in one of Germany’s leading scientific regions, MetaSystems is a truly global organization. We operate seven subsidiaries in the United States, Argentina, Italy, India, China (including Hong Kong), and Japan. In addition, our network of more than 50 international partners ensures that we deliver outstanding service, technical expertise, and state-of-the-art solutions to laboratories, institutes, universities, and private research organizations around the world.

Products & Services
Ikaros
Ikaros 7 offers a fully automated, DNN-based workflow that generates preliminary karyogram drafts in the background. Users receive clearly labeled draft karyograms and band count estimates alongside metaphase images; these are only added to official case data and reports after explicit user approval.
Designed for clarity and flexibility, Ikaros 7 enhances visualization of even subtle fluorescence signals, enabling precise analysis. Integrated workflows streamline complex tasks, reduce manual steps, and ensure a smooth imaging process from acquisition to evaluation.
Ikaros 7.0 is classified in the European Union as in vitro diagnostic Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) Class A under IVDR (EU) 2017/746 and carries the CE mark unless otherwise specified. MetaSystems products are used worldwide and should be operated in accordance with their intended use and applicable regional regulations.
Metafer
Metafer is a platform software designed to control standard microscopes and related hardware, enabling slide scanning, digital image acquisition, image processing, and measurement of key features. It combines automation, precision, and scalability for modern laboratories, managing contrast modes, objectives, and filters while intelligent autofocusing ensures consistently sharp images.
Flexible and scalable, Metafer supports high-throughput operation with options such as the SlideFeeder x80 for up to 800 slides, an automatic oil dispenser for seamless magnification changes, and barcode integration. Results are presented in a clear gallery with linked slide coordinates for fast navigation, while measurement data can be viewed directly or analyzed through intuitive charts.
With the Neon module, users can organize images and findings—including data from Ikaros and third-party systems—compile reports, and manage complete workflows. Customization Packages further extend flexibility: MetaSystems application specialists work closely with each lab to configure Metafer according to specific needs, accelerating implementation and ensuring efficient routine use.
Metafer 4.4 and Ikaros 7.0 are classified in the European Union as in vitro diagnostic Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) Class A under IVDR (EU) 2017/746 and carry the CE mark unless otherwise specified. MetaSystems products are used worldwide and must be operated in accordance with their intended use and applicable regional regulations.
Neon 2.0 is classified as an accessory for in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVD) in the European Union in accordance with the In Vitro Diagnostics Regulation (EU) 2017/746.
MetaSystems software includes image processing tools, such as machine and deep learning algorithms for pattern recognition. Results generated by these features are preliminary suggestions and must always be reviewed and validated by qualified experts.
Customization Packages are based on workflows successfully implemented in other laboratories using standard Metafer functionality. While MetaSystems specialists support configuration based on this experience, system performance depends on slide quality and user expertise. Validation for clinical use remains the sole responsibility of the customer laboratory.
